RADIO FREQUENCY

Course Information:

Radiofrequency energy uses the tissue’s resistance within the various layers of the skin to transform the (RF) energy given to the skin into thermal energy (heat). Many considerations are required for there to be successful transfer of the RF energy into thermal energy, including the size and depth of the tissue being treated. Since RF energy produces an electrical current instead of a light source, tissue damage can be minimized, and epidermal melanin is not damaged either. RF energies can be used for patients of all skin types – that is, it is colour blind and allows for different depths of penetration based on what is to be treated, allowing for ultimate collagen contraction and production of new collagen.

Radio Frequency Definition:

  • (RF) is energy generated by a high-frequency alternating current (the flow of electric charge periodically reverses direction, as opposed to direct current that is one directional). This is transferred into radiated heat.
  • The frequency is repetitive and produces frequencies of:
    1. 3 MHz (shallow)
    2. 1 MHZ (deep)
  • This results in excellent result due to raising the temperature to different body tissues.
  • RF works by conduction. Through electromagnetic radiation that generates an electrical field, a circular or rotational motion is produced in the molecules. Raising the tissue temperature.
  • Heat is concentrated in the dermis stopping any discomfort to the outer layers (epidermis).
  • The circular or rotational motion of the molecules causes the superficial collagen to retract and restructures the deep collagen.
    1. This enhances the thermal effect, stimulating blood flow to the skin.
    2. Activation of collagenesis (production of healthy tissue and collagen, an increase in blood supply creating live tissue thus replacing the dead tissue area).
    3. Regeneration of the connective tissue though stimulation of fibroblasts, which in turn produce new fibres

ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound delivers ultrasound energy to calculated depths to the deep dermis and subdermal tissue. Neocollagenesis and tissue contraction occurs within weeks and months of treatment. The energy is focused and delivered precisely and surrounding tissue is not affected. Making it a very safe treatment.

We are seeing various terms used for ultrasound:

  • High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
HIFU involves thermal and cavitation to cause cell disruption and death and used on  adipose tissue for body contouring.
  • Microfocused ultrasound (MFU)
MFU relies on heat to achieve tissue effects using lower energy to treat the superficial layers of the skin
  • Focused ultrasound (FUS)
FUS is used frequently in the aesthetic industry. It is similar to the ultrasound used in medical imaging and uses different frequencies of energy. The ultrasound energy to a small focal point where the elevated temperatures are capable of causing tissue coagulation. Like medical imaging, the beam of ultrasound energy can pass harmlessly through the skin allowing the focal point to target the subcutaneous tissues.

The tightening of tissue occurs due to the heating of specific zones of tissue.

Various evidence suggests that dermal collagen and elastic fibres were increased in number, causing thickening of the reticular dermis.

Collagen remodelling occurs up to around three months and persists for around one year, which is similar to radio frequency.
